Hi wdf. im seriously considering if to purchase the book on rwd by ethan marcotte & wondering if will be a good move. I know bits n bats, but i wish to 1) alter my site for mobile devices & 2) build future sites with rwd in mind. plus maybe delve deeper into app development. Curious for advice. thanks

 

Ps: the books about £22 shipped

If it's his book via List Apart, I have a copy somewhere which was worth a read. It's mostly the fundamentals so do recommend it, but it's not necessarily the be all and end all. If it is the same book I'm thinking of (yellow cover, printed around 2010) £22 is a little steep. If you can find it as an eBook, that might be better. In summary, worthy in your collection but not at £22. In my opinion.

whats the biggest difference between the 2?

unless you just want a physical book for your collection, then you can just learn off the net. ton of resources out there, from a list apart to smashing magazine, and everything in between. plus, I don't think the books will be up to current trends already, the rwd movement is moving super quick and, after the fundamentals, new things are coming out often and specs are changing.

 

If you just want your site responsive, dw about the book.

As much as the web is immediately up-to-date, I don't think books date immediately after release. Also they are specialist so rather than 2,000 words in an article, you'll get a whole lot more. Books are far from dead but I respect what you're saying. Online is mostly free and with the likes of Smashing Mag, you can learn heaps. However, with the combo of articles, books, vids, peers and good old fashioned hands on experimentation, you can learn a great deal. If online stuff was the only source, then I'd be a doctor by now

This bookis very good to get you started. The problem with trying to learn for free online is that there are so many personal techniques and unfinished/unanswered works. This book will give your good grounding and its worth the investment.
