April 8, 201313 yr Hi everybody, I just went full-time web dev and I am rebuilding my own website to help my business. I have reached an issue, where my block of code seems like a site error and I can't figure a way to clean it. Here the link to my website so you can see the issue and maybe give me some advice and feedback about the code block issue and anything else you might see. As a test I have used two different plugin for the code block, and I can't figure out which one works better. www stefanovirgulti it I thank all of you a lot in advance. Please be ruthless, I need to improve myself
April 9, 201313 yr Hello, Terix I'm not of the developer ilk to be honest, so not entirely sure what the error is you're seeing. When you say code block, are you referring to the code in the post? I think I'm missing something as it looks fine to me.
April 9, 201313 yr Hey Terix, If you're referring to the initial block of 'codice', I think your issue is you haven't wrapped the element inside the <pre> tag </pre> as you have done with the others. As far as I can see, it's just wrapped in a <div> tag. Hope this helps, Lyndsey.
April 9, 201313 yr Author I'm sorry I didn't explain myself enough The two different styles that i used for the block codes are intentional I am testing the two styles to see which one look better, and I was asking for an opinion. I have made a screenshot with the two styles, I can't figure out which one is better.

I have made a screenshot with the two styles, I can't figure out which one is better. Ah, my apologies Personally, I prefer the second style. I feel like the differentiation between the normal paragraph and the code block is more apparent. This style separates the content from the code better, in my opinion. Hope this helps, Lyndsey.
April 9, 201313 yr Sorry about that, Terix. I think it's more my intepretation that your explanation (feel like my brain has been replaced with porridge today!). Usually I would say number 1 and it's clearer initially, but when I follow code in tutorials etc, I find that having the alternating lines of colour easier to follow. So with that in mind, I would say the second example (although I do like the green vertical line to break it up). The first one reminds me of when I'm writing markup and the only real way to stay on top of things is to indent everything.
April 9, 201313 yr Author Thanks a lot both for the feedback, I had the same doubts about the two styles and I will go with the second one (maybe when I will have some spare time I will try to hack the vertical green bar on the second style) I think that this one is solved then And for the overall layout/feeling of the website, what do you think? It's nice?
April 9, 201313 yr And for the overall layout/feeling of the website, what do you think? It's nice? I want to just say something like it's rubbish to give you a ruthless critique as per your first post, but it's not rubbish - so I can't say that To be completely honest, the overall design doesn't really grab my attention. I think it might be the lack of colour. You did say that you're a dev, so no doubt your development skills are tippety-top. I think that the logo/header text for Virgulti is a little too big and perhaps you could take that down by a third. The actual content looks very nice and clean and in my opinion, that's what is important here. My Italian ability is non-existant I'm afraid, but you can get the gist of things clearly. One more thing might be worth add more into the actual navigation bar because at the moment it doesn't serve much purpose. In terms of function, yours is the type of site that I regularly frequent and it serves a purpose (let us not forget that design isn't about making things pretty ). Believe it or not, I do actually like it, but I think having a look into the above areas may help. I'm not the best person for criticising work as I know how much time and effort goes into it, so opt to keep criticism minimal - even if that proves counter-productive at times!
April 9, 201313 yr Author Thanks a lot, after i read your message, I looked back at my site and I totally agree with your point of view. The site is still work in progress and I will soon add more pages and items on the menu. I will also add color to put in evidence specific items, for example i will soon place a button called "contact me" and it will be in orange color (complementary to the main blue that I use everywhere). I will make the improvements and write here again when they are done, thanks!
April 9, 201313 yr I appreciate that it's a work in progress, Terix and apologise if for any unintentional discouragement. Depending on the type of orange, I think it will compliment what you've got quite well. I'm looking forward to the revisions
April 10, 201313 yr Author I have updated the homepage with the changes you suggested (and it looks much better), but now I'm kind stuck on the landing pages for the services. I'm working on the "websites" service page and I can't figure out how to build it.... Now it looks too much like a normal wordpress page, but it needs to have a more appealing look... Maybe I should remove the image, build a nice title (based on the slogan of the image) and a bigger font for the text description of the service.. I need to put nice text content here if I want it nicely indexed by Google the page I'm talking about is called "Siti Web" on the menu, do you have any thoughts about it?
April 10, 201313 yr It looks better with the smaller header. This time around my eye was drawn to the duplicate social icons. Maybe you can remove the larger icons next to Virgulti as you have them in the super header at the top. The services section you talk about, is that based on branding as well? I can't understand Italian I'm afraid (also Google translate isn't as good as people think - used it with Japanese and comes out very wrong at times!!). If that's the case, perhaps you could get rid of the WWW and make an image that is consistent 'Contattami'. I like the colour but maybe not a button within a button. The navbar looks much better with some links in. I'm a fan of those style navbars. I've used them in Foundation and Bootstrap and they're very functional (implementing the 'burger' - three line toggle ). I'm not an SEO person, but I see your logic in having text for the services section. Maybe create and icon/graphic of some sorts for the three sections would add a bit of variety and draw the attention for your users to click!
April 22, 201313 yr I like the module boxes with the subtly heavier shadow at the bottom. It looks clean and professional but a little incoherent design-wise. You have a couple of different styles -rounded gradations for navbar and buttons and a flatish sharp look to your logo. I also think a splash of colour (orange perhaps?) would go a long way in pulling things together a bit. Really, I think it serves its purpose quite well especially since you are more of a developper than a designer but you asked for ruthless critique so there you are
April 23, 201313 yr Everything at the top looks quite large. The logo, elements on the banner etc. I would try reducing the size of these elements and see how they look.
