As above, do you think they do? Or are they simply beneficial for what they serve as, a press release for those that read it?

 

It was a well known fact that press releases had a HUGE backlink boost, but i wonder if thats another fact that Google have turned into a myth?

Yes as above. But remember, Google isn't a total bad guy. Good links are good links. Their main aim is to get rid of spammers. Pure and simple. A press release, by it's very nature, isn't spam. imho

Press releases are good and getting info on other sites is good - just make sure any back links count by checking to see if the page has any 'nofollow' links. You want your SEO to count so don't bother with stuff that doesn't count.

 

To check if a page has no follow links:

 

open the page in your browser

right click on choose page source

click edit

then find and do a search for 'nofollow'

 

If the links back to other sites are no follow - go else where

I wouldn't be telling people that. Yes, you want do-follow links but the most natural way of building links is to include no follow links. IF you get 2,000 unique links and all of them were do follow, Google will be suspect

But, the problem is if we overdo any kind of marketing mediums then its called like spam. So, be try to keep away yourself from spammy strategies and focus on building natural links always.

These do work well for ranking, try to use the best PR sites as some carry good authority and give you great link juice.
