Creating manual HDR effect in Photoshop?

I'm not sure if I can post this on webdesignerforum.co.uk at all, but basically I have this image what I need where you see a street, and the sky. I didn't take it with any HDR settings.

In PhotoShop I created two images now: A brighter one with more contrast, that makes the street look so nice! However, the brightness that I add makes the red sky and the clouds disappear. So I created this other image, with higher contrast as well, but lower brightness.

Both look fantastic, and I want to combine them now.

I know there's a script for that already, but it absolutely doesn't do what I want. I really only want to combine the sky with the street / houses. Is there an easier way than using the eraser tool to erase the too bright sky from the first picture?
