Can domain registrars change contact info on a domain legally?

I have had several domains registered with Othello hosting for sometime. They've always been an awful company for support and after deciding enough was enough I began transferring the domains elsewhere. In the meantime they have rebranded to Astutium and in their infinite wisdom decided to update all MY domains with THEIR contact info. So, when I changed all the contact info back to my info and attempted to transfer the domains they were rejected on the basis the contact info had changed recently.

 

How can this be right, is changing the contact info of someone else's domain even legal?

I've been unable to get any definite answer on this. It is so infuriating, Astutium are no use whatsoever and just keep referring me to policies and procedures. Unfortunately, I can't find any policies that say changing the contact details of my domains is not allowed. My search continues...
