Basically the first domain name I registered (with my first website) is due to expire tomorrow (GoDaddy) and I am looking to re-register it with 123-reg (unless there are better options?) I've not done this before, so is it as simple as registering with 123-reg and following the options provided?

As Rob has said, most domains are not transferrable within 30 days each side of renewal. So, just renew with GoDaddy, then in 31 days time, do yourself a massive favour and get bthat domain the hell away from them

You are going to need more than luck. I know the trouble I had trying to gain control of a domain from http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/office365/ , that almost brought me to tears lol
