Hi,

New member/poster with a simple question.

 

I own some web space, currently using 2% of the disk capacity. I own 2 other domain names.

Can I partition my webspace to host 3 individual websites to run simultaneously?

 

Maybe not partition the drive but allow the site to accept 3 separate addresses without the user knowing they was in the same web space as site x or y.

 

If so, how?

And; Are there any do's and don'ts?

Depends on how the server's set up. Is it Cpanel, Plesk etc? If so, what's the package, and who's your host?

Hi Martin, it is dependant on the type of hosting you have. I suspect that you have shared hosting which means you can only host one domain within that space, however, most web hosts allow you to create sub domains which although not ideal, means you could create sub domains and point your domain names towards these. If you use a "frame" direction I believe it is called, although your registar may use another term, it is possible to have your sub domain carry it's own domain name in the sense that the domain name would appear in the address bar. For SEO it is far from ideal but then if your "secondary" domain was looking as if it had potential to do well you could give it the dedicated hosting it deserved. Hope this has not confused the issue further. Jim

This is how a lot of hosting actually works, if you've got relatively cheap hosting (eg under ~£100/month) then you're almost certainly on a server that is handling lots of sites, each one running as a different user or as an entire virtual server, the "one true server" simply reroutes different domain names to different user accounts or different virtual servers.

 

Whether you can take advantage of it entirely depends on your hosts.

 

An alternative would be running other sites as subdomains:

 

http://sitex.mymaindomain.com

http://sitey.mymaindomain.com

http://sitez.mymaindomain.com

I can add 5 subdomains and the 'frame' direction is available Jamaks. My hosting plan is only a cheap one.

 

So, (let me get this right), each NEW web address would include the original domain name in the address bar?

I was hoping that I could hide each of the other names so the user thought the 3 sites were all individual.

According to this page you can host as many as you like. Look for something relating to "addon domains" in your panel.

They don't make it clear whether this is multiple domains, each with their own site, or whether they simply allow you to point multiple domains at the one site. Worth checking.

I've got a client who has the shared hosting and has ~200 websites each with their own domain. Each website has its own directory within the root. Then use 1and1 and change the destination of the domain

Pick the directory that's for that domain and it should be done.

 

Hi Martin, the actual address would be simething like newdomain.original.com but the address bar would show newdomain.com The frame over-rides the real address. Jason is suggesting that 1and1 make the process even easier but he would be the person to advise you further on their systems. If you ensure that you place the canonical tag on each page then the seo penalty of using a sub domain will be minimal and individual pages within your new site will be judged fairly. Jim

I have my original web site www.original.co.uk (Destination) Web space.

On my 2nd site www.second.co.uk (Destination) Forwarded to http://www.second.co.uk

my 3rd site www.third.co.uk (Destination) Forwarded to http://www.third.co.uk

 

I don't have (or can't see) a destination folder to upload files to.

 

When I use Expression, I'm directed to my original site for publishing. Should I have a different FTP login or do I use my original and direct files through there?

 

Also (and this is for Jason) should I contact 1and1 and ask them to set up some destination folders for me to access?
