Just wanted to quickly ask something. I have a big client and we're building the e-commerce arm of the website. Normally for smaller clients we'd use an agent like SagePay or something, so that they flick out at the very last moment to enter the card details, and then go back to the site to finish up. This is normally OK for such clients. However in this case, we need to fully integrate the payment module, i.e. so that the user never leaves the site, and we can fully customise the payment module (i.e the form). Does anyone know how this works? My colleague says that in this case, one has to contact a bank directly, sign something, and then they send a payment module packet of code to use however one wants...

 

I suppose basically I'm asking how do big online retailers (gap, Nike, reebok etc) manage this. The budget is good so it's a sort of money-no-object situation. Thanks for any help!

Money no object is good, because the server has to pass PCI-DSS compliance.

 

As far as the site itself goes, what ecommerce software are you using? Most have prepackaged modules for most of the major payment gateways.

We were using SagePay as I said, but it's not suitable for this purpose... when you say 'pre packaged module', what do you mean exactly?

Using OpenCart as an example, it comes with these gateways built in but there are also these extensions.

Ok I've looked at that, but again, it says "OpenCart has a template system built in so you can easily switch between different templates or migrate the current look of your site into OpenCart"

 

..the site we-re building is def not a template, and the examples they give look awful.

 

However, I looked at that Braintree payment gateway, and the sites it gives are good and nicely made, fully customisable... so do I just need to pay for Braintree and off we go? Excuse ignorance, and thanks.

So what software ARE you using?

 

There's a gallery of OpenCart-powered sites here. Note that this is just an example of how one ecommerce CMS handles payment gateways - I'm not advocating you use OpenCart specifically because I don't know enough about the scope and goals of your project - it's a good fit for some projects but not others.

 

I'd also suggest that you engage someone who's experienced at delivering large-scale ecommerce solutions - either that or load up on a metric ****-ton of professional indemnity insurance, because if you try to deliver a PCI-compliant site while learning on the job, you'll need it.
