July 11, 201214 yr Hello everybody I would be very grateful for your opinion and critique. I'm working with a website for children - www.elektromagija.lt. Its design is old and unfriendly for users, navigation is messy and inconvenient so we (our company) want to redesign it. We understand that a design for children should be colorful, with large buttons and a larger font of text. Maybe you have more insights about this design? Also we would like to get feedback about the characters. We thought that they are rather unattractive, but users participating in the survey on Facebook says that the characters are cute and they like them... What do YOU think?
July 11, 201214 yr design looks bit dated They know, they want advice on how to make it look better Kristina, you are right, it is an old design and not particularly user friendly. The biggest problem is the flash. For a start, it nearly crashed my computer. Secondly, it doesn't do anything you couldn't do with CSS and jQuery. Thirdly, a lot of children are using iPads, so making a childrens site work on an iPad is in my opinion often more important and useful than making normal sites work on tablets. My suggestions would be: - Characters and colour scheme are fine but depends on the age range. They're obviously not ideal for young children but for 9-14 they look OK to me. - Definitely use a fun and funky font for the headings only. Don't use it for body text, and only use for navigation if it's very easy to read. And don't use comic sans! - Make the site responsive, so it works on iPads. Kids love playing on iPads. - Remove the dependency on flash. - Give the text and elements more padding and whitespace. Every thing is quite tightly packed which makes it difficult for kids. Make the text a little bigger (but not huge) and more spaced out. Hope that helps.
July 11, 201214 yr I like it! It's simple and looks really nice, a tad dated however. My favourite part is the hover effect on the nav bar! Characters are good! Slightly creepy but very well made. Edited July 11, 201214 yr by Willheim
July 11, 201214 yr Personally I'd increase the font size, perhaps an easier to read body font too. The site could do with a bit more padding as it all feels a bit cramped. It's by no means an ugly or bad design, just needs loosening up a touch. Oh and as Brightonmike says, drop the irrelevant flash and animate in css or jquery (or both).
