Hi, for the last year I have been expanding my personal projects that were once solely physical computing and robotics, however now I have a few other services to offer, web development, photography, among other web related things.

 

Right, I was asked to(if possible) put everything into one website.

 

I don't feel like it's right to have my more personal robotics projects in the same place as my web portfolio and the like...

 

My idea would be to have a splash screen that gives the user the choice to visit physical computing/robotics side of the site, and the commercial side of the site... reckon this could work?

That's a tricky one, and one I've thought about myself recently. I hope to address it in my long-delayed redesign.

 

I'd say that if you've got to the point of considering a splash screen (don't) you should probably separate it all off into two sites. By all means link between them if you want to maintain the connection, but if your thinking has led you to splash screens you're already thinking of them as two separate entities so they should be two separate sites.

 

The splash screen idea - I'd counsel you against it, because the only time the idea ever comes out is when someone's trying to jam two or more incompatible ideas into the same website, and because it's a page with almost zero value to search engines and precisely zero value to all of your visitors - if they land on that page at all it's one more click between them and where they want to be.

Don't force you users to make a decision that isn't needed. The splash screen will just give you a huge bounce rate.

 

Have a portfolio of work and a personal blog where you document the personal side of things.

 

You website should have a focus, and it seems that you want to sell you web design side of things. Push that on the main website, but make it a personal website. Talk about you and the designs you've done. Then on the blog you can write about anything your heart desires and showcase the work. The right design and good use of tags and categories will be more than enough should the user want to delve into that side of things
