I want a .co.uk name but its currently registered, but the site looks like its closed down. I wonder of the person has no use for it now but is holding onto it ??? April 23, 201214 yr Not exactly sure why you think it's closed down, but unless you're willing to pay a lot for that domain, don't expect to have it any time soon. It's going to be a very popular domain to get a hold of if it's even for sale, but it's registered til 2013 so even on the offchance it expires (very unlikely) you're still going to be waiting almost 14 months for it
April 23, 201214 yr Author When you navigate to the site there is a "This site has Shutdown" message on it. The only other one I can really go for .org.uk - but isnt this more for non profit organisations ?
April 23, 201214 yr I really don't see that on the site, I just see a regular hosting site according to godaddy, the .org.uk is taken. I'll be honest, you'll be lucky to get a word as popular as daily for your domain with any extension

April 23, 201214 yr Sorry but i can’t help but notice that notice that no one has really offered an answer to the forum newcomers questions, well with the exception of the .org.uk thing. Ok so firstly the fact that you want to use Word Press has nothing to do with the domain name. You can have anything imaginable and as long as your hosting company provides PHP and MySQL database hosting then you are good to go. On the domain name issue, if it is already taken then you could email the owner and ask them if they are willing to sell it you but it is normally more viable to just go for a different variation. You can normally find the owner by going to who.is and typing in the domain that you are after. Now that is out of the way, you don’t have to use the same company for the domain that you do the hosting. The only reason that you might want to do this is for convenience. You will be able to pay one fee be it per month or year for both services and it may automatically link the hosting to the domain which would save you configuration. If you decide to get your domain name from a different company to the hosting that is perfectible acceptable and all you have to do is provide the domain name company / control panel with the name servers. This is an address that instructs the DNS to link to the hosting server when that domain is typed in. sound complicated? ... it really isn’t. Most hosting and domain reg companies will provide help or documentation on how to do this. Or you can ring me! I provide a managed hosting service for £75 per year with a domain name of your choice. April 24, 201214 yr How do you go about choosing the best hosting site for a WordPress website ? Minimum is to look for a host that supports the WordPress minimum requirments. You might also want to find a web host that offers a 1-click WordPress installer. Next it comes down to hosting speed. WordPress can be a pretty demanding beast at the best of times so look for a host that offers your site a decent amount of memory and CPU. Cheaper host cuts corners by restricting server resources so they can squeeze 1000's of sites on one server. If Google ranking is importnat you'l also want to consider a genuine UK host. I say 'genuine' as many supposedly UK hosts actually have their servers located in Germany or US. Finally, if you think you'll need help with your new WordPress site it's worth asking your host if they actually know anything about WordPress beyond their 1-click installer. We've been hosting and building WordPress sites since v1 so are always happy to answer even the most tricky of questions. Do you need to get the domain name and host from the same place ? No. Some people like to buy their domain from one company, and then host it elsewhere. Others prefer the convenience of having their domains and hosting all on the same bill. If you choose a decent web host which is also Nominet accredited (like us) you get extra protection. Nominet are the main UK authority that manages all .UK domains.
