Development time

Featured Replies

Hi there, it's been a while since I've last visited the site but I was wondering if you awesome people could help me out with a little predicament.

My situation is this. I'm working for an agency and have a little experience developing ecommerce sites in joomla with virtuemart. If I'm honest I don't particularly like the system and would rather use something else but alas, it's what I'm being made to use.

My problem is that they expect me to get an entire ecommerce site built within 3 days which I think is pretty unreasonable and nigh on impossible for the sites I'm being given. In my own opinion, I wouldn't like to work on an ecommerce site in less than 5 days otherwise it becomes a rush job.

Just wanted a few opinions really. Am I being taken advantage of? And how long does it take you to develop an ecommerce site in the platform you use?

Cheers, and as always any help is appreciated.

3 days is reasonable if you are picking from a selection of existing themes and plugins (extra functionality outside of the virtuemart) and don't have to add content to the site yourself.

If you are making or tweaking a theme them yes I agree its far too short a development period.

If you are being given the product pictures, descriptions meta etc and have to do other typed content like the about page then again its too short because that takes time to be done correctly. (Although usually I don't get my design fees for entering content but considering its not what my job should be it would be nice for the inconvienience)

Cheers for that. I agree, if it was a matter of simply tweaking something that already exists, I would be happier, but I'm creating a complete new skin from scratch. I reuse some code from previous projects but that only saves you so much time.

To be honest content entry should be chargeable really because you're going out if your way to do something that time consuming, and in this industry time is money.
