Yeah, i feel the same way - my design skills have improved considerably over the last 4 years so the new version will be somewhat different.

I'm not too experienced to give a really good opinion, but if it can help, i'll chip in a little..

 

The first thing i notice is that the letter style that you use for your name etc, doesn't quite fit with the rest of the page. It may just be me but it's very much an old style script and i think that it takes away from the rest of the sites more modern feel. I would go with a really crisp and clean style.

 

Also, if it were me - i would swap the flash based images at the top (portfolio and CV) for just a single bit of imagery, flash or otherwise. I would go with something which just screams out 'web design'. After all, i believe that the main purpose of your site is to get some freelance work in this area. I would suggest that your CV link could perhaps take a backseat and really make this main area of space count where it matters most.

 

One final small thing.. I would also ditch the red in the page and would just leave the cool 'ice' cyan and the green - I think that it would help in terms of being a bit less distracting.

 

Other than that bud, it looks great - Good job. I'm looking forward to seeing the new design.

Couple of criticisms:

I don't like the typeface you've used for your name, something more full bodied like Creampuff would probably make it more legible and smooth - it's a CocaCola derivative that you're using at the moment isn't it?

Second, I think the Flash animation on the buttons is kind of superfluous, and also quite slow. They've just got to be slick and to the point.

Site styling is generally okay - but if I'm honest it looks like an e-shop template - there's lot of content but not much style. One would expect to see a visually stylish site from a graphic designer. Here's a good example:

Well the website was build near on 4/5 years ago to act as a CV (self promotion). Since then, its hardly been touched, i just update my CV. At the time, it was built in somewhat of a rush - as I was working full time as a techy and not what I graduated as!

 

I totally agree with everything said so far. Its interesting getting this feedback - it reinforces my views really.

Well, my employment is that of a developer (PHP/MySQL) but I also design and do XHTML/CSS - everything through to SEO really.

 

The current site is optimised for "staffordshire web design", and rocks on MSN and 10th/14thishy on Google.

 

The new site will be a "web designer/developer blog" with general news and info from where I work along with ways to contact me for a chat in my office - referring all work to the company I work for.

lol and yes... its the coca-cola styley font... seemed an unusual choice at the time!
