Wordpress site replacing existing one

Featured Replies

Hi everyone

I just wanted a little advice. I have an existing site at www.dswebdesigns.co.uk . I have been working on a new site, built in Wordpress and I am ready to launch very soon. I Wordpress installed in a subdomain for my existing blog. I need to get the posts I have written from my existing blog page to display on the page designated in my new design.

I also wonder what the best course of action is regarding my existing urls. I have some decent rankings in local searches that I don't want to lose. Do I re-direct to the new pages in the Wordpress site or can I use custom permalinks to match the existing names? I'm a little unsure as this is my first real Wordpress project.

Thank you all in advance!

David

Depends on the structure of your existing URLs. If they're static files with html extension you're out of luck with the permalinks route; best to 301 them in your .htaccess file.

because of a footer and header include, they are .php file names if that helps?

they all do end .php so I guess that is a no! I will look into 301 directs. Is that the best way to go with forwarding? I want to be sure to stay on Google's good side from my existing pages, SEO etc

Hmm all depends on how its set up.

When you create a new post, it puts a permalink there for you, but you can edit it. So try changing it to what the one now is.

Just redirect them in .htaccess.

This is a good time to move to extension-less permalinks, because cool URIs don't change. Imagine if ten years into the future PHP has died out and RoR has taken over - you'll wish you didn't have that ".php" extension.

Hi again,

Sorry to trouble you all.

I wanted to take your advice and do the 301 forwarding. I am hosted with Namesco and access to the htaccess file seems a little restriced. In using Filezilla and forcing hidden files to show, I still cant see the file. Also, in all the information I have seen so far, it seems to demonstrate forwarding entire domains but I only need a handful of url's forwarding.

Can anyone advise how to forward just particular url's? Sorry to be a pain and thank you for your help
