New Design I'm Working On

i dont find theres much to review yet. The design is very simple and the content isnt there. Im also not sure how the black box's will end up like.

mmm i disagree i like the design, simple and clear is both clean and good - it aids communication, usability, allows for better colour schemes and clear presentation of content.

personally i'd make the black boxes smaller if they were pictures. but as said you don't know what will go in the m yet.

good luck

if you could elaborate on the ie probs we may be able to help.

great work.

one other thing can you fix the top right logo to the right edge of black boxes if window maximised, i'm on 1650*1050 here or such like and the logo shifts way right of the right edge of layout in larger window size.

completely with you on keeping the logo in screen for smaller window sizes...maybe needs a maximum-width?

An idea for the next years website for my local volleyball club

Having IE problems and I would like te hear your opinion about it.

The background color used is too bright, please try to use a different tone or make the color a bit darker.

And I checked this site in IE6, IE7 and FF.

In IE7 there is a Horizontal Scrollbar.

Well, it's a website.. I'm not sure you could actually call it a design as it there doesn't seem to be a concept involved.

I think that's actually very unkind, regardless of my opinion that this is a simple and clean design, unfussy, allowing content and the logo to stand out.

Let's see what it looks like with images added in.

The blues interesting I don't usually like brights but I actually rather like it here, it's a good shade.

Continuing it's neat and functional, in my view some thought has gone into it.

I'd stop the logo pushing right of the content, push the navigation up 7 pixels and maybe make them boxes smaller.

There may be little in the way of 'clever' stuff (by the way 'nowt wrong with clever stuff) but the basics (including clear concept) are all there.

If the basics are out, layout, sizing, alignment then no amount of fancy stuff can make it look professional.

Ignore them otherMinamalism.

good luck :flm7:

oh rob spotted one thing on your own site

I'm 18 years old and I study Accountency-Informatics.

Acount*a*ncy is an a and not an e, but as your Dutch.... ;)

I think my opinion is halfway between these folks :p

It looks like there is half a concept, and half a design there. Neither are at all bad. It is simple and clean. You're halfway there.

I actually like the blue, but think that perhaps a very, very mild gradient would give it a bit of life?

I think that if you could put the content into the black boxes and show us how that is intended to look we would be able to see how you intend to tie it all together and we'd have a lot more to go on.

I agree 100% with headcoat's suggestions for jiggling things about a bit, and additionally I feel that it could do with one or two less items in the navigation to add to the clean and simpleness.

Was it? Apologies then, it's not meant to be unkind at all. I do stand by it though. Making a site isn't the same as designing one. Designing a site involves making decisions on the layout, colour etc based on what the client needs. Has the look of this site evolved from researching what the client needs and addressing those needs? I could be wrong, but I'd guess no.

stop being such a peacemaker

ps your right, but *half* a baked cake baked well has more potential than a *burnt* one :Db:

I could say maybe the client wanted the blue, wanted to give prominence to the logo and have a simple box content structure.

But I'd be guessing, I have no idea.

What I do know in Erin's phrasing is that is is at *least* half a design and half a concept. The guy who designed it is 18 years old and I would say has potential. He didn't ask for critcism but suggestions...why not take another look and suggest how you'd improve it rather than flatten him?

Enough from me.

That was more my point, this design is certainly on it's way,

I would say at the moment, it isn't better than the current site, but I think it definitely has the potential to be better.

I would like to see some content and some tweaking as per the comments here and I think there'd be more to see.

One thing is the page doesn't currently validate, it's just missing an Alt attribute on the logo.

A couple of additional suggestions while I'm posting, the first would be to get rid of the border around the logo which shows up because it is a link, the second is that this is the kind of site I can see Vertical Rhythm really making a difference on.

Well, it's a website.. I'm not sure you could actually call it a design as it there doesn't seem to be a concept involved.

^ hardly a 'flattening'

..but yeah, I didn't put much in the way of suggestions. That's because I didn't (and still don't) see a concept. Wanting blue, having a simple box structure and giving prominence to the logo doesn't amount to a concept. Without a concept, a design is pretty much dead in the water. How do you know what direction you should be heading in? If you don't know what direction you should be heading in, how can you make suggestions for improvement?

But maybe I could have put "the concept needs development". Maybe that would have been less harsh.

I agree. What we are discussing is somethjing Iv'e come across on the small businesses forum but to the opposite extreme. This is partly why I have started coming onto this site - people are more balanced.

On the other forum there is a website reviews section, and most of the poeple that comment on the sites do so very harshly. Nothing is ever very good, and there is always something terribly wrong. Guess what? They are always the ones to fix it for you!

Although I don't like that sort of extreme, I also believe that you should start with a positive and then give your true thoughts. After-all, thats what people are asking for - and that is the most helpful. Thus, I don't think feedback can be cruel - unless is't put very negatively in the first place. I don't agree this is.

The layout for this site is just simply someone's plan. We all have various levels of skill and experience that we have built up over time. For a college project, it's okay. For a commercial site - its awful. It's all relative...

In terms of the site, the general layout is quite basic, so I would maybe think about creating a stronger theme or presence in the header. Maybe just put a very slim logo at the top, then a wider banner underneath that shows a picture of people playing volleyball etc. That would work well for a college site and look really god.

Look for the replies from someone called 'fisix'. We have had a couple of run in's about the way he puts people down. However, I think this site is the opposite extreme. The comments here are a little bit TOO nice in some ways.

What do you think?

Paul.

last word/s for me, ok a flattening was a touch harsh.

how do you think otherMinamilism should develop this concept, if there is no concept what direction should he look in for one and what if the concept is minamilism as per his name!

:flm7:

Good post. To qualify my original point if someone told me that my site had no design I'd be kind of upset. And I'd say no it's not awful, it could do with some work. But it has an idea there and the basics were right.

I've seen many a 'professional' site without the innate (a basic one) sense of design I see in this guys site. The so called professional sites use badly produced commercial graphic styles to hide a lack of design.

Eris was right, apologies to you Bumfluff, let's agree to disagree, I made some reasonable (I hope) design suggestions, I'm not a concept man so won't go there.

no apology needed, but I'll take it anyway. 'cos I'm greedy like that :)

It's always tough to know how much honesty to balance with tact. I do believe in honesty but I also believe in kindness. I think you can have both.

Of course, if you think a design is truly awful, there is a conflict between honesty and kindness - but I can't say I've ever seen a truly awful design on here.

I think this forum is so popular partly because folks are mainly honest about their opinions, but also very encouraging with their suggestions.

As for my opinions on this site, I think it has potential, and I also like the simplicity, but if it were mine I would make the following changes:

Push logo to far right edge to line up with col3.

Use a different font & size for the nav to fit it all on one line.

Bring the overall width in a small amount - enough to have a little bit of the background showing on the right on a 1024 width monitor.

Edit::

The so called professional sites use badly produced commercial graphic styles to hide a lack of design.

 I could never think of a good way of expressing that thought, but you've just done it for me. I know my designs aren't the best out there either, but at least I'm not pretending they are.

I salute you again, Mr Headcoat :flm7:
