May I suggest adding a hover effect on the item. As there is nothing to suggest that this is a UI element. Maybe CSS hover? :)

I know what you mean - the top of the menu slides up/down about 10px as the menu opens.

 

Thats an unfortunate side-effect of slidetoggle - also had this problem with the past.

You may be able to get around it by applying absolute positioning?
