March 31, 200818 yr The BBC news stories have updated design-wise, so they fit the updated BBC design properly now. Interestingly, the beeb has gone for 1024x768 as the minimum.. if they are doing it I might have to follow suit.
March 31, 200818 yr Oo, not sure I like that design on the news areas! It worked ok for the front page, but it looks too sparse with all the text. Also, the sidebar doesn't align with the top of the content, but that's me being a picky perfectionist Glad they got rid of the animated BBC News 24 link in the header, though - that was mighty annoying.

March 31, 200818 yr For the home news page my first feeling is I think its OK and will quickly get used to it. However I always have "ignore font sizes specified on web pages " set on IE and the largest text as I prefer that , finding most page text too small with my PC set up and the distance I am from the screen. -
March 31, 200818 yr is looking good i reckon. prefer it to the home page - don't forget news is all about information so there will be a lot of text, the actual bbc home page will be more geared towards a populace audience - e.g. the rounded edges and bright colours.

March 31, 200818 yr Designing for 1024x768 has been becoming more prevalent in the last year or two. Personally, I think I've only had 1 visitor to my website who used 800x600 - it just isn't worth holding back your design for that 0.01% (insert random percentage here ). Obviously, now the BBC have done it, most of the 800x600 advocates will jump on the bandwagon.
April 1, 200818 yr I must say I like it! One of the biggest improvements in my opinion is the navigation, seems a lot easier to get around now! The news ticker is a bit funky, one of the few websites which can get away with such a thing. On the news pages I think the right sidebar is a bit wider than it needs to be, and that extra space could a be a few more pixels of margin either side of the main content. Needs a tad more whitespace either side I think.

April 1, 200818 yr They are also still using tables for the layout, come on BBC, it doesn't take much to follow the web standards! blimey your right there is some tables. i'd guess this is due to it being some old code carried over form the previous version of site, that hasn't been rewritten due to time constraints. bbc web web guidelines etc do focus heavily on accessibility and standards - but as with any big organisation it's very tough to ensure 100% compliance across the whole piece.

April 1, 200818 yr There still seems to be a few bugs in the layout - I've noticed this on a few pages, where there is a highlighted comment (red box) the font size changes ~ see picture. I've seen this in FF but not IE - wonder if they've done any cross browser checks?

Still, they are great at pushing things forward, tables or not glad you think that, often people consider the beeb to be years behind in the area of ta interweb what is for certain is if the bbc have gone 1024*768 for instance then even the most accessibility orientated designer/developer/company is likely to follow suit. usability chap once said to me if the bbc do it then it's ok!
April 1, 200818 yr I've heard that phrase many times before, as well. Scares me slightly. When I said that they are pushing things forward, I meant with their own website, not the web design community as a whole. There are loads of things the BBC are doing wrong (tables, etc), but there are also many things they are doing right, like pioneering Internet TV in the UK, and providing some of the best online resources hands-down, world wide. I just hope they don't get too sucked into web2.0, and keep their own style.
