A client has just asked me if placing the same word on every page in the exact same place would be counted as a duplicate by google or any other search engines.

Im quite sure it wouldnt be counted as a duplicate but thought i would check with the professionals before i get back to them.

That is an interesting point. I'd be surprised if they did though, as people will have lots of the same text on loads of pages, like navigation, logo/company name, copyright info, etc.

It can depend on the content really and which word you are wanting to duplicate, however having the same word should not be counted as a duplicate because it is relevant context. Which word and phrase will you be using?

They want to place 'canvas prints' on every page and since the website sells prints its relevant to the page so like rob said i doubt google would actually count it as a duplicate.

Ok, just dont forget to use <strong> and <h1> <h2> etc for your main keywords.

They shouldn't put you down for it, as nav bars etc appear in the smae place on each page and they should be relevant to the content.

For a start, no its not duplicate content at all - otherwise your navigation would be duplicate content too!

Secondly, there's no penalty for duplicate content within one site. You can duplicate your own pages across your site as much as you want, it won't cause any penalties, but similarly it also won't benefit your site in any way.

To the orignial poster: No. Googlebot looks at the entire page and decides whether it is duplicate based on everything put together. Googlebot is sensible enough to know that a strapline here and a nav menu there isn't duplicate content.

EggMan - I've been filtered from SERPS by having duplicate content accross my own site. I blocked the duplicate content via robots.txt and the original content was reincluded in SERPS within weeks. Whether a coincidence or not I dont know, but I belive you CAN be filtered by having dup content on your own site.

All duplicate content on your own site does is dilute your power, dilute your page rank, and spreads your site thin, meaning Google doesnt know which page to index, and doesnt see any of them as particularly important. But you cannot receive a penalty for it.
