Question regarding Alt Tags

Featured Replies

Hey,

So I'm making a website that I want to perform well in search engines. I like valid xhtml as well.

I incude alt tags for all of my images, but what is best practices for images that are completely unrelated?? For instance, in my menu, before every list item I have a picture of an arrow. I need the alt tag there for the site to be valid, but the arrow has nothing to do with my topic! Do I give each arrow a different alt tag of 'My widget!', 'Best widget', etc? Or should I just have the alt tag be 'arrow' and have that end up being a significant keyword google finds in my site?

So basically my question is, keyword stuff alt tags of unrelated images or go straight? What do you guys do?

For your menu if you are using a ul/li list style then you can use the arrow as a background image and position the link beside the arrow.
