how to put a password on a downloadable link?

Featured Replies

Hi folks,

I've just created a landing page for a client.

On the landing page there is a link to download a zip file.

Is there anyway to put a password on this link??

(the client doesn't want anyone stealing their designs)

link

Thanks

Quick and easy way is to use htaccess to protect the directory with the download. You can use a simple htacess password generator

Firstly, I find it funny that you talk about locking down a link because the client doesn't want anyone downloading it and then sharing the link on here with access to the unlocked download. It's like telling me not to press a red button, I'm just going to do it! Luckily I'm at work so that stopped my desperate need to download such a file.

Anyway, onto the subject in hand,

You could do it by Javascript too, if you don't have access to the .htaccess file, however be warned this is no fool proof way and anyone with a decent web development brain could get past it.

Have a look here, sure you will find something useful

Does the htaccess method lock down the whole page?

This is no good as they want other users to view the site thatr won't have a password.

You can put the downloaded file in a subdirectory and put the htaccess file in there. It will only protect the directory and subdirectories the htaccess file is in

The javascript method is quite poor because any user can easily disable javascript

Thanks everyone got a password on it.

It might not be the most secure but the clients happy.

Thanks Again!!
