Hi I fairly to to web design and I only have a few site under my belt

but the people i did them for seem very happy so I through of a

portfolio site advertising for services under a temporary domain name for now.

 

I like some feedback on the content and layout.

Its still a work in progress and I stress I'm still fairly new to the web design

game.

I would say you should start thinking about the little touches in your design which really make it stand out and become unique - deffo ditch the header for a start.

 

I am not a massive fan of the navigation, it just looks a bit mid-90s to me.

Thanks for the feedback as I said I've only started web design a 9 months ago I have a lot to learn.

First response was wooo trippy. I think you have a basis for start now, just fine tune everything. Like getting rid of bullet points, making the header small and more creative, and changing the colors

For 9 months, that is a good place to be - just do lots of reading up on design (use Smashing Magazine) and you will get a better grasp of colours and visual hierarchy etc...

Narrow the right column and also narrowed the overall width of the page.

Hey its not that bullet points are a bad idea they were just in a weird place over to the left, but i think that making your own bullet point could be more promising that way people see you are looking at every detail of the site.

Andy, I have to say, I don't like it. I know you have only been in the web design world for 9 months, but my advice to you is to really start doing a lot of photoshop tutorials and work. Really get your skills in that side of things up.

 

Your coding is ok, fairly clean (although inline css is a no-no!) so you just need to step the design side of things up.

 

One technique I use (which I am writing a tutorial on at the moment) is to take something ordinary and then make 1 small change at a time to make it your own.

 

So you have a nice start here, now try adding some little bits and bobs onto it to really make it your own

Hey, I was actually expecting much worse when I heard you had only been doing it for 9 months. I'm actually quite jealous I didn't get such a fast start. xP

 

I think what ArchDesignLabs meant about your bullet list is that it could do with a bit of margin in the UL (so it isn't fully to the left of the page) and that it could maybe do with an image instead of a dot, you could do a dot image with a border if you like, it just looks better with a bit of style, you could even try a square, no image needed and it's just a bit less "default."

 

The green could probably do to be a little less "olive," make it further away from the yellow and a bit less white.

 

Looking at your Portfolio as well, you seem to have some great works considering your lack of experience.

 

Keep up with web design, you're off to an amazing start!

I do take as many short cuts as possibly (customising templates / using a theme building software and using out of the box plugins by other people so I have a lot to learn about the intricacies of Web Design.

 

I figure if the people want sites made from the ground up I advice them to go elsewhere, I fully disclose my methods and charge modestly.

 

I did an interview for a web design course recently with a big focus on the business side of freelancing and internet marketing. Hopefully this will help me improve and learn.

 

I figure I can use lynda.com to brush up on the tech side.
