Hi all,

 

I was wondering, how did most people find it to secure a job in Web Design?

 

I'm currently trawling through the W3 tutorials on HTML & CSS, and then hopefully XHTML and then PSD to CSS etc. But how much do you need to know, to land a Junior role in Web Design? Do you need to have a portfolio, or would some employers be impressed if you could just showcase how much you knew in theory, without having any practical case studies, i.e. A Portfolio.

I honestly got my job with a certain amount of HTML knowledge, having an eye for good design and being a fast learner. I only got the interview because my dad worked with a guy who was getting a website done by this other guy who runs his own business.. I was bought up in conversation and he gave him his card to give to me to give him a call. Had an interview a day or two later and got the job on the spot. Was just luuucky really. I did have a small portfolio though, which he'd asked to see. And they asked me to create a template there and then at the interview.

I think when I get my portfolio a little but more 'full', I'll go around e-mailing some of the agencies that are based around here.

My first 9-5 web development job I got on the strength of my portfolio/interview, they also had test questions for each candidate on HTML, Javascript and Perl. Nowadays I've heard of companies asking to see candidates blogs/twitter as well because there is so much competition.

 

I would be very surprised if someone got a job by just saying they could make websites. Like pretty much every skilled/professional job you need to have evidence that you can do it. You couldn't just go into a hair dresser and say 'yeah I can cut hair, give me a job', same applies for web design.
