Hi all, I was on a web design course but had to stop halfway through due to illness. The teacher has advised me that I ought to start again in September as I had missed a large portion of the CSS tutorial and it would be impossible for him to teach me what I had missed out on, which is totally understandable.

 

In the meantime, I hope to pick up some tips on the forum.

 

I work as an alarm engineer, but hope to attain enough knowledge about web design so that I can build nice looking sites.

Hi Linksy,

 

Well firstly a bit of practice with standard HTML isn't a bad place to start. CSS sort of just passed me by and I'm only just picking it up now to be fair, but doesn't stop me getting on.

 

What else are you familiar with? If you've got the basic idea of how to construct pages, using images and making links then that's a big part of it for small basic sites. You can do some good looking stuff that way.

 

You can catch up with CSS as you go along IMHO and there's bound to be plenty info to be found on our good friend google!!

Maybe its just me, but I've always found the w3schools tutorials not very good. They are too dry and don't go into any depth. Like I say, maybe its just me.

I guess its personal preference, but if you are just starting out with css it gives you an insight into what the basic commands do and also shows you the effects when you change the example code.

Thats true it tells you what the basic commands do, but in a very "<p> does this, <a> does this, <li> does this..." listing kind of way which makes it hard to sink in, and doesn't help you put the pieces together for when you actually need to put it into practice. Just my thoughts.

Thanks for a lot advice from all whom have taken the time out to offer me some tips. I am really grateful. It is great to know that there people who don't just have knowledge, but are prepared to share that knowledge with others - and spend the time to do such.
