April 12, 201016 yr Hello to all the other "newbees" and respectful hello to my soon-to-be lords of wisdom. Well from reading a few posts here and there I think I'm in the right place. I nearly chucked in the towel tonight when I viewed my latest 2 creations on Win-PC IE7... oh I could cry ... I thought it was all beautiful - on my Mac. I've been good and read lots of stuff on CSS2 - IE fixes etc. Sob. OK. Not beaten yet. My background is graphic design (print media/advertising) but I reinvented myself as a 'web designer' about 14 years ago. Hand coded HTML and CSS-1 until I discovered Dreamweaver and then developed some lazy habits. I'm fairly up to speed with with CSS-2 and I have a smatter of PHP to go with MySQL but it seems I kind of only just scrape by. My clients have more sophisticated expectations these days. They want jQuery and CMS. Wordpress scares me (so I reinvented the wheel). Hopefully I have something to offer others just starting out. I definitely have lots more to learn. My biggest problem at the moment is getting around cross-browser issues. So that's quite a bit about me - now I will make a post for help!
April 12, 201016 yr Hi Anakowi, welcome to WDF - where abouts 'down under' are you? You are definitely in the right place for friendly support and advice Wordpress isn't as scary as it seems, try this tutorial: http://line25.com/tutorials/how-to-build-your-own-wordpress-theme as it will give you a really good idea of turning html/css to wordpress. My advice to you on X-browser issues are: 1.Start with a great reset css file (a good one here) 2. Check as you go along on all browsers, don't leave it till you have completed the build. 3. KISS (Keep it simple, stupid) is my mantra. Make sure your html code is as clean and semantic as possible, that way, any issues are a lot easier to resolve. 4. Use a great cross browsing system like browsershots.org and really test a lot of browsers Good luck and welcome
April 12, 201016 yr Author thanks for the advice. I will check out the links - after a good night's sleep. Oh yeah, I have seen the reset and a few days ago revised mine after reading this: “base.css” versus “reset.css”. I've been doing so much learning in the last few weeks - my head's spinning. That's a cool avatar photo - made me laugh! Is it pen or a tattoo? Is it you even? Down-under is Byron NSW.
