December 28, 200718 yr Hi I have "completed" the redesign of Motley Health now and your thoughts will be appreciated. I have simplified the main menu (i.e. no styling) and changed the side menus. I think that I need to do something with the main header image - specifically the name - but cannot decide what exactly. The main thing I cannot work out is how to get the grey backgrounds on the sidebars to always go all the way down to the footer. Is this a big problem? Will people be put off by this? Let me know what you think, and if you have any simple suggestions for improvements! Cheers Jon.
December 28, 200718 yr a few things: - the site needs a better logo - try some color, borders around the letters, maybe even a gradient or two! - the header image needs to be saved at a higher quality setting - aim for approx 100kb for something this size. - the main horizontal menu needs some form of styling - it looks like an advert at the moment. Maybe try a dropdown?
December 28, 200718 yr It's far too 'busy' for my eyes. It's the kind of site that I would instantly click off as it looks like it's jam packed full of advertising and un-organised content...my eye doesn't move smoothly from one part of the page to another - it jumps all over the place as nothing really has priority...so I would think about structuring your content so that it's easier on the eye. Also your logo needs work - it doesn't stand out and has no impact. The header image should be nice and crisp - not pixelated and blurry. Your main navigation contains too many links - it's on two lines kind of looks like google ads. Streamline your content so that it can be categorised better so that you can reduce the amount of link you have as your primary nav.
December 29, 200718 yr Author Cheers for the advice. I had thought about the menu before. It used to be styled in a similar way to the sides, but I wanted to simplify things. I guess that I do need a drop down menu of sorts. There are a lot of sections to fit in, so I will need to consider grouping various parts together, otherwise it just won't fit. And thanks for pointing out the image issue, as I did not notice it was pixellated on my small monitor! I really need to get a better screen.
December 29, 200718 yr try grouping stuff into categories...like aerobic training weight training circuit training blogs shop health and nutrition and then within those section have a sub menu to the left or right that contains links to more specific stuff
January 1, 200818 yr Author OK, I have found a menu which sort of works, but seems slow to load. Sometimes the drop down items are not visible immediately, which could confuse / annoy readers. Do you think that I should ditch it now and search again, or is there a way to speed it up / fix it? www.motleyhealth.com/test.html Cheers Jon.
January 2, 200818 yr Author Finally got a new menu that works AND looks OK. For those also looking for a neat menu that works in IE as well as FF, then I found mine here: http://www.ex-designz.net/template/tempdet...asp?temp_id=327 Cheers Jon.
January 6, 200818 yr he's Ok but he never checks his work on a Mac as I've found a lot of his scripts works fine in PC browsers, but fail terribly in Mac browsers.
January 7, 200818 yr Author he's Ok but he never checks his work on a Mac as I've found a lot of his scripts works fine in PC browsers, but fail terribly in Mac browsers. If anyone with a Mac can check Motley Health, specifically the dropdown menu at the top, it would be much appreciated! Cheers Jon.
January 21, 200818 yr Author Hello again. I have de-busied the section pages now. Is this an improvement? Trying to break the info down and give the readers fewer choices to start with, to point them the the popular articles. Whatdyafink?
October 21, 201115 yr Author Wow, almost 4 years since I started this thread. I cannot remember what the site was like then, I should have added a screenshot. Well, new design and layout. New logo (already old now), hopefully better menu, de-cluttered (but de-cluttered enough?).
