December 29, 200916 yr Hi Guys Recently I have started an online web design service for Kurds and locals in my area. I have the contract template (from WDF) but there is one thing I don't get. Say I get a potential client. We talk about what he/she wants ..etc (what the site is about, looking for a dark or light design, heavy gfx or not ..etc) and I get a clear idea. Do I ask him/her for a deposit (30% to 50% depending on price of whole project) before doing anything at all ? Or do I do some work .. and then ask for a deposit before I continue ? Because I'm thinking what if the person turns around and says " Why should I pay this guy so much money (e.g. 50% deposit) when he hasn't done a bit of work .. also when I don't know I'll be liking his work or not !! I'd appreciate some clarification on this issue. Thank you.
December 29, 200916 yr I charge before work starts, if they're not so sure they wont like your work then they shouldn't be hiring your services.
December 30, 200916 yr I agree with Lee, they have the luxury of browsing through your portfolio and testimonials and whatever else you can provide them to make a healthy decision. Web designing is not try before you buy, it's a commitment and both parties need to show some good will of trust. Offer them a refund if they don't like your initial draft if you really want the contract. But get that deposit. Trust me if they bail it's because they aren't serious. Show them you are a professional and gain their respect.
December 30, 200916 yr When you rent a flat, you pay a deposit. When you get a car on finance, you pay a deposit. It's not an unusual set up.
