I'm new to this, and learning as I go.

 

I'm at the stage where I have a design or two to present to clients, but how should I go about that? Load it onto a USB stick, or is there somewhere to host?

 

Does anyone have any thoughts/recommendations with regards to hosting? I'd like to be able to offer my clients hosting and email facilities.

 

As I said, I'm a noob, and I appreciate this may be a "how long is a piece of string" - but your experience would be greatly appreciated.

Yh, present it on the USB stick, Or your office computer. You can get portable Apache/MSQL servers if your design requires php ect, http://www.uniformserver.com

 

Hosting:

You pay for the hosting and domain, then add your money on top easy as that, although there maby some better suggestions.

Your hosting account should allow you to create subdomains at no additional cost.

 

I open a subdomain on my main site for every client's job - and only transfer it to their servers once complete and paid for.

 

Eg: newclient.mydomain.com

 

The client can then access the site while it is being developed and provide valuable feeback and there is no need to leave your desk.

Not necessarily, it depends on whether your package allows this.

 

Trick202 - if you plan to offer hosting as part of your service, you could consider getting a hosting reseller account which then allows you to be in in control of what the client gets and what they are charged and when.

 

By doing this, you may (again, possibly dependant on the particular host you choose so check first) have a facility to set up the client account on the server and build the site to be visible under a preview URL (e.g. www.trick202.com/~clientname).

 

Once everything is complete and you are ready to launch, you change the nameservers on the client domain for it to start working under their own domain. You do not need to worry about moving any files that way, which isn't such a big deal with static sites but if you've got databases and stuff it has the potential for unnecessary headaches.
