On this web page, I have added a wrapper to give the main section a white background, altough it does not encompass the whole area when no height is set, is there a way around this?

It's because your using floats.

add overflow hidden to the wrapper , then alter the margin-top to 75px in #add, also alter the width of the wrapper to 830px
