Installing a MySQL database

Featured Replies

I am trying to install MODx and need to create a database, whatever I seem to do does not work. I've created the database added the user and given full permissions but MODx is still saying connection to host failed.

Does anyone know of a beginners guide to installing a database?

I'm editing my post: I just downloaded MODx (never heard of it before today...) and installed it on one of our basic hosted domains. (A 1&1 Linux Beginner package we use for testing: we figure if it works here it will work on any LAMP system.)

I downloaded, unzipped, uploaded and then followed the instructions to set all the files/folders in assets/cache, assets/export, and assets/images to 777.

As I was installing, there seems to be 3 steps to getting the db setup and one of them is NOT intuitive 'cause they fill in a default, which will almost always be wrong unless you create your own databases:

1. Giving the server location, db username and password (intuitive and straightforward)

2. Providing the db name after you press "Test database server connection and view collations": this is where I ran into trouble. They provide a default here and if I left the Database Name set to the default modx I got a connection failed error. Dropping in my database name got me moving.

3. Choose SET NAMES from the dropdown Connection Method.

Hope this helps (or even makes sense).

Thanks for the info. I am now one stage further on although still having issues. I left the database host field blank and connection to host passed with just my user name and password. I'm now stuck at stage 2, the creation of the database. I have used my own unique names and selected SET NAMES from the drop down box as you suggested but the install still fails. The instructions state if the user does not have the correct permissions the install may fail, but I certainly have full permissions. I have left the default utf8_general_ci field as it is. Any other ideas?

I'm not a SQL guru: just enough to get by. The only thing I see different between what you did and what I did, is that I didn't set my own names: I let MODx do that. Perhaps you should try without setting yours and see what happens?

Unless there is some reason you need to set unique names...

No I don't really need to set my own names but it doesn't accept the default ones either. I've completly lost interest in installing it now to be honest, but thank you very much for your help :)
