Firstly, forget PageRank for now.

 

And forget 'systems'.

 

First, build a nice compliant, clean and semantically correct webpage. Lots of content, rich text particularly, and lots of relevant pages. Avoid spamming, and avoid complex 'hiding of keywords'.

 

THEN get some nice people to link into it for you.

 

THEN wait a while.

 

You will be amazed at how quickly you can get a good index rank, just by being honest and following the simple rules above.

That's not necessarily true IMHO. It is true in the majority of cases (especially SMEs), but it ultimately depends on the business and keywords (e.g. a site that sells Viagra. Good luck! It will take you a lot of work to rank well).

 

Also, to maintain your ranking does take a certain amount of diligence; whether that means SEO, paying a content writer or something else entirely depends again on the individual business's needs.

Ok you got me there. But in the end if you pay some good attention to your content and keywords you can get a long way. I get pissed off at "companies" who tell clients they will optimize for SEO, get paid thousands of dollars, and in the end all they did was add some metakeywords. There are genuiine companies out there but most of them are just buzzing some keywords and mislead their clients in the whole SEO craze.

If the site's created properly in the first place, and your web builder is giving you the right level of service, you shouldn't need to pay any SEO.

 

As for targetting generic or popular keywords, we give our clients a full training on Adwords... and let them set their rates and monitor their own performances.

When it comes to SEO, the job of modern search engines is to "recommend" sites based on its analysis of your site. Someone above said you don't need to fork out money to enhance your ranking. This is definitely true. As mentioned above if you conform to the usual guidelines, you won't be penalised. It's also worth noting that if someone is searching for BMWs, you don't want Postman Pat's web site appearing (I have no idea why I gave those examples, but my point was that you really want to attract the right visitors.

 

Here's a list of things you can do/check for.

 

1. Check if you have a robots.txt file in your site root. This will give search engine robots an idea where it is permitted to sniff around your site, especially if you have physically separated your site out by using subfolders.

 

2. Generate a sitemap of your structure. There are many tools out there that can generate the sitemap XML. You can then submit this to Google (along with your Robots.txt file).

 

In time, Google will start indexing based on the "content" of your site - not just the META and Title tags. Also, one other point worth noting is Search Engine Friendly (SEF) URLs. If you're using a CMS, your CMS may be able to generate good URLs that look like /section/content.html instead of /index.php?p=1&item=2 etc etc.
