Registering a Domain Name

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

Back for some more advice please.

I’d like to register a new domain name. I’ve already checked that it’s available and it’s a dot com domain.

When I do a google search there seem to be a thousand and one companies offering to register this domain for me etc.

Any reason why I would choose one company over another? What should I look out for?

All advice much appreciated. :)

1. Price

2. Can you change the nameservers to point at your web host?

3. Customer service

4. reviews

If you are UK based then the ones i recommend are www.123-reg.co.uk, www.daily.co.uk.

For a .co.uk domain, its about £3-5 a year (you need to buy in 2 year increments though)

.com is about £10-£15 per year.

Hi, thanks for the reply.

Price seems to only differ by a few pounds at most so doesn't seem to be that big an issue? Or am I missing something?

Do you know if one can change the nameservers to point at my web honest with www.123-reg.co.uk or www.daily.co.uk?

Do you get e-mail addresses (etc) with these guys as well? (or is do you get that with everyone?)

Yes 123-reg and daily offer nameserver redirection,

No email addresses but if your host has cpanel you can set them up through that, also google will set up gmail accounts in your domain name

Hi Guys, you sound like you know your stuff so I was hoping you could help me too!

I'm developing a site for a customer who has a pretty common business name and as a result most of the domain names for his business are taken.

He's now asking me if he is ok to register either a .tl or a .es even though his business is in the UK. Would it make a difference or should I tell him not to do it?

Thanks guys!

First up: Faevilangel +1 for your excellent response to the OP :)

@TheCheek - I would suggest trying to convince him to change his domain to something else:

1. try adding dashes into the domain (eg www.my-domain-name.co.uk)

2. adding UK to the end of the domain (e.g. www.mydomainnameUK.co.uk)

3. Changing the domain to relate to the business sector (e.g. www.mydomainnameELECTRICAL.co.uk)

Also have a look at http://domai.nr/ and try different permetations in there :)

Good luck

Hi terydinho, thanks for the quick response. I have already tried to convince him of those things but he is quite insistant on keeping the name the same. Is there any reason why using .tel or .es would cause a problem?

Thanks.

Other than the standard response from his potential clients that it is untrusted. People trust .com and .co.uk domains, but when they stray away from that, even into the .net side of things, people start to doubt the company in question...

Thanks again, this gives me some info to try to persuade him to stick with a common domain.

P.S. I think I've found my new web design forum, you guys were very quick and knowledgable and I think I might be handy if someone else needs help since I have my own areas of expertise. Cheers!

No problems TheCheek :)

Welcome to WDF - and if I have helped you out then please do join my Cause on Facebook (in my Sig) and also follow me on Twitter (again in the sig) as it would be a big help :)

To select the good domain registrar consider the factors given below...

1.Quality keywords,

2.Price,

3.Plan,

4.Customer support,

5.Company existence.

If a company provides these all factors means you can choose it without any doubt. There are many online providers available with these factors like Tucktail.com .

That's great you choose your domain name ,so register it and keep in mind, price, bandwidth and better service is the key point of your site. And don't forgot to put your own details during registration, most of the case the registration comapnies are put their details.
