Configuring Apache 2.2/MySQL 5.1/PHP 5.2 for development purposes on my computer

Featured Replies

I'm a self taught hobbyist and in the process of building my first site, which will has a database of specific businesses searchable by postcode/suburb.

The HTML is well under control, but I need to build the database search which I want to be able to develop and test on my computer before going 'live'. As advised by others, to do this, I downloaded Apache Server 2.2/MySQL Server 5.1/PHP 5.2 I also downloaded PHP MyAdmin as suggested.

Everything I do with MySQL is working great, but I just don't get what I am meant to do with Apache/PHP/PHP MyAdmin downloads! I have read(and re-read and re-read again) the installation and setup documentation but they aren't written for hobbyists like me.

Is there some simple instal/setup/config resources for Apache/PHP/PHPMyAdmin without all the tech jargon that is in each of their own manuals?

Am I meant to do something to make them work together or something?

And how do I get the PHPAdmin window to open?

If you don't know how to configure anything, I recommend you download a pre-apackaged setup which installs Apache, PHP and MySQL and configures them for you.

What OS are you using?

Try this: http://www.wampserver.com/en/

Windows Apache MySL PHP (WAMP)

Alternatively, you can use http://www.mamp.info/en/index.html for OS X.

I hope this helps rolleyes.gif

PHPMyAdmin (as I assumed you meant there?) is a Web-based application. To use it, you first need to have Apache and PHP installed correctly, then copy the PHPMyAdmin files and finally adjust its configuration to suit your system.

If you're on Linux, a complete LAMP install is typically very easy to achieve using your package manager.

On Windows you can try (as mentioned above) WAMP (Windows/Apache/MySQL/PHP including phpMyAdmin) or on Windows, Linux or Mac OS X, XAMPP (Apache/MySQL/PHP/Perl with phpMyAdmin and various utility applications). Both will do the installation for you in a friendly manner.

Like its been said above, you want to be using XAMPP or WAMP. If you're on windows then go for WAMP as it will be easier for a beginner to control

Thanks everyone for the advice. I already have the listed programs downloaded, so should I uninstall them before I get WAMP? Or will WAMP overwrite the existing files?

OS = Windows XP

WAMP will probably install everything in its own directories, but it's best to uninstall the other stuff if you're not going to use them rolleyes.gif

Thank you. I've removed my originals and now installed WAMP

Are there any standard settings from the WAMP installation that I should reconfigure myself?

I assume that everything is set to be used "as-is" for coding purposes. My intent at this point is to develop and trial run my site locally on my computer before I eventually go live. Does the standard installation fulfill this?

Also, is there any security settings I need to check within WAMP(or the included programs) that I need to be aware of or need to change to avoid security breaches within my own computer or externally from a permanent internet connection?
