October 2, 200917 yr Hi Everyone, It does my head in trying to get sites to desplay correctly in IE's, mainly IE6. Sometimes i just give up and ignore IE6 all together. I was curious how many people actually bother designing for IE6 anymore considering only around 12% of people actually use it, and the majority of those are company intranets. Anyone with a choice has upgraded. I've just stumbled across IETester mentioned in another topic which will help me enormously, using an imac i had to upload files before i could check them in IE. Cheers Tony
October 2, 200917 yr I think it depends who you expect to look at your website. If it's for friends who you know have modern computers, then ignore IE6, but if you are a professional website designer and the general public will be the viewers, then 12% with IE6 may be a lot of viewers. I still check IE6 and I think most website designers still do.
October 2, 200917 yr As Microsoft are encouraging designers/developers to support IE6 for the next few years, I'd say it was advisable to at least try. It is frustrating, but it's not as bad as people make out - I try and fully support IE6 where possible for both layout and functionality. 12% is quite high... If you had 10,000 viewers, 1,200 would see the "broken" version. BenTheDesigner
October 5, 200917 yr Author what would you suggest to be the best approach? conditional comments pointing to separate stylesheets?
October 5, 200917 yr You can use IE specific stylesheets, yes. You could also use PHP to detect the browser using get_browser() - although I'm not sure if all hosts support this - I had some trouble getting my host to enable it. BenTheDesigner
October 5, 200917 yr I haven't really had any issues with IE. My site shows the same in all versions from IE5.5 onwards.
October 5, 200917 yr Mine is compatible with IE6 upwards and I'll support IE6 until there is no longer any need. I wouldn't go as far back as IE5.5 - according to W3Schools, only 0.5% of people were using it back in June 2008, and there are no figures for after then... My guess is that the stats are too low.
