Self hosting - newbie needs info

Featured Replies

Hello there,

I'm quite new to this so please bear with me.

I'm still studying on a web designer/developer course but I heard it that freelance web designers sometimes self-host the websites they create for clients. I would like to look into that but I don't even know where to start. What is it that I need? - well, I guess a web server, as a start. Any recommendations or criterias? What application do I need to run on it? I'm working in ASP.NET.

I'm just trying to get as much information as possible to see how much it'd cost me to set up a self-hosting service - whether it is worth it. Could you please point me into the right direction?

Many thanks in advance,

Tam

To be honest, if your a web designer and developer then I would stick to that and get really good at it :) Hosting requires a totally different skill set and it will take you much more time/effort/money to set your own hosting up then it will to pay a few pounds a month and get a reseller/VPS account on an already established host.

We don't do hosting for ASP.NET but try talking to Carl at http://www.csnewmedia.co.uk he has a good reputation and does Windows hosting (seems like a nice chap too).

In my experience most self host attempts end in tears!

Hope that helps
