I’ve just joined this forum hoping for some friendly advice and guidance. I’ve never designed a website before and if I’m honest I’m not really sure where to start.

 

Ideally I’d like some free software to allow me to play with formats and make webpages etc.

 

My preference as far as style goes is always contemporary. Ultimately the website I hope to produce will mainly be information based. However I’d like some functionality where prospective customers can submit queries.

If you're looking for free software, try Notepad++ or if you're a student you can take advantage of the free design software from Microsoft Dreamspark.

 

If you don't know where to start, W3Schools is a good for learning HTML.

Like christian21 said, Notepad++ is a free text editor. OpenWYSIWYG is a free what-you-see-is-what-you-get html editor (although I've not tried it). Visit HTMLDog, The CSS Guide and w3schools and you're on your way to web designdom.
