Monitor upgrade suggestions

Featured Replies

Well ive decided its time to upgrade my cheap and nasty monitor, its just straining my eyes too much ... im looking for a 24" HD monitor, full 1920 x 1080. Ill mainly be using the monitor for designing but i may also be using this for my ps3 too, i havent decided yet. Thing is i have a 40" HD tv already for the ps3 but its just taking up all the room, so im thinking ill try a smaller monitor see if that works. Just i might not be able to get used to playing on a small screen so this isnt necessary just a plus. Obviously i want the best spec monitor i can get but in my budget of £170, preferrably im looking to spend around £140 but if theres a massive spec difference for a little extra £ then ill spend the extra. So far ive been looking at the Dell ST2310 which is only 23" but it looks a nice monitor. Another one ive been looking at is the BenQ G2420HD which im told is a very good make.

Now im not very well up on monitors, so thats why im here for advice. Are these monitors any good, do you have any suggestions on what i should go for. Would really appreciate some guidance here i dont wanna be buying something ill regret.

Thanks

Forgot to mention the monitor must have vga and hd inputs, and a plus would be some sort of a anti glare screen built in (i think the dell one above has that) but i suppose i could always buy a screen filter if the glares that bad, maybe i wont need one with the monitor being a higher spec ?

Dont know if any use but i took order of my new monitors the other day and I'm well happy.

I ended up with 2 x LG W2261VP - they have DSUB - DVI and HDMI and are 1920x1080. 50,000:1 - and 2 MS -

Very pleased with them. and for a PC I think the size is fine. Got mine from aria £157 incVAT - DABS do them for £156 inc free P&P.

Hope this may help (there may be a larger version of the same kind.

Thanks, looks a good monitor but whats DSUB and MS ?

Just comparing the specs to the BenQ - the LG has a better dynamic contrast ratio at 50,000:1 where the BenQ only has 40,000:1 but saying that the Benq has a better response time 5ms compared to just 2ms with the LG and its also a bigger monitor. Would the lower contrast ratio make much of a difference ? Just i can save myself £10 on the BenQ and it does seem a really good monitor. My only worry is with the dell it specifically says display type: anti glare but with the other monitors i havent seen this at all.

EDIT: figured out dsub and ms :bangb:

Im watching the BenQ stock go down only 48 left, thinking i might get it ... the anti glare is that really something i should consider ? i find with my current monitor i get a lot of eyestrain/headaches but its basically just a cheap 19" lcd monitor so maybe thats the problem. With a high end monitor i might not get eyestrain at all.

just a quick one the MS is better the "lower" its is so a responce of 2ms is better than 5ms.

Hope your happy with what ever you choose, its always hard making your mind up with so many things available.

Thanks i would have bought that thinking the higher ms is better :)

I really dont know what to buy, theres really too many. I was set on the BenQ but now i know the response time isnt so great im having second thoughts ...

Just looked at the specs for my current monitor and well its nothing special (see here) so whatever i get im sure will be an improvement. I just dont wanna rush into this so im gonna look around.

Still would apprecaite any monitors you guys recommend, im now considering the LG but not sure its big enough <_<

Beware of the whole contrast ratio and dynamic contrast ratio. They're completely different.

Most companies will list the dynamic because it's generally a higher a number, and people tend to get sucked in by bigger numbers in this kind of thing.

So basically i'm saying a dynamic contrast ratio of 40,000:1 might not be as good as say a contrast ratio of 5000:1

I spent ages tryin to find a way to compare between dynamic, and non dynamic. And couldn't find a way.

There is no uniform standard for measuring contrast ratio. This needs to be said before anything else. Generally you can only compare the CR rating with other models by the same brand and usually for the same model year also. None of them are accurate regardless of what they state but because there is no set statndard they can get away with however they measure it.

...

Contrast Ratio is a measurement of this difference between the blackest black and the whitest white that the display can display. Dynamic CR is when the back lighting is adjusted dynamically for darker scenes to give you better black levels. A processor inside the display tries to adjust the levels depending on the scene currently on the display.

If done properly it CAN help to give the appearance of higher contrast ratios, but done poorly, it can crush black (blacken shadows so you cannot see what is in the shadows very well).

it's gotta be 3D even just for the gaming, but still a good monitor, I've got a Samsung 2232 and its good. can't wait till i can afford a 3D one >.<

Samsung/Nvidia 3D

Wow now that would be cool, theres been a ruumour about 3d gaming coming to ps3 too. Not important to me since i really just need a decent monitor to design things on, but just out of interest what monitors would nvidia 3d work with ?

I'm thinking about buying HP 2475w in the near future, i believe it's also worth considering if you are after 24'' screen. Bit more expensive though.. But S-IPS is worth it i guess. What do you guys think about this monitor? Does anyone have it? Opinions?
