HTML 5

HTML actually looks pretty interesting :)

Ben,

I'm liking the canvas idea.

Ben

Interesting, yes, but if you use any of the new tags like canvas, audio or video, people with old browsers will see a broken page because the tags won't be processed.

Note that in section 1.6 HTML Vs XHTML it says "The first such concrete syntax is the HTML syntax. This is the format recommended for most authors."

I can't see myself using any new tags in a public site for many years, although I'll probably experiment on a private website.

I have to agree with you there, it does hold some good potential for the future but as he states in the video about Ajax taking like 6 years to come into full use in the industry, it might not be that long for HTML5 but it will be some time.

As you say about old browsers we still have MSIE6 and 5 in some cases, Not sure if they are still being updated?

Firefox2 which I think mozilla have stopped updating now.

Safari is safari so should work, same with opera, but with safari and opera its whether the user updates the software or not.

I too will experiment on private sites and little projects i can think of, after all the private testing will be useful for when it gets "standardised"

Ben

someone mentioned in one of the other threads that there is a small piece of javascript that will enable HTML5 to be rendered in older browsers, they didn't mention what it was tho

maybe i'll google it...

EDIT: ok had a quick look found HTML5 shiv, but as far as i can tell it just lets you use the new tags, I think the use of some of the cooler stuff like SVG support is long way off.

Unless we can boot IE off the web :)

That's an interesting link but all it does is set styles in javascript for an element IE doesn't recognise.

I have my doubts that it would work with video element which propably needs complicated processing, not just styling, unless you substitute object for video, in which case why not use object in the first place.

Interesting topic, nice vid too, can't wait to it's released and compliant with all browsers and lets kick MSIE out all together it sucks
