however i am struggling on finding a way to replace my current default header with my new image.

it would depend how you are displaying the image, a link to your site might enable us to help more...

is the header an image ?

go into the admin, panel, the appearance tab, then click editor

open the header.php file

remove

<div id="header" role="banner">
<div id="headerimg">
<h1><a href="http://www.alexdowiedesign.net/">Alex Dowie Design Blog</a></h1>
<div class="description">Alex Dowie Graphic Design</div>
</div>
</div>

replace with

<div id="header">
<img src="wp-content/themes/"themename"/images/image.png" alt=""/>
</div>

"themename" = your theme name, your using, if your using the default ones the change to default

image.png is the name of the image for your banner

upload the image to your wordpress folders using ftp... put it in the images folder of the theme your using
