Just took over the maintenance of this website, because their previous guy up and disappeared.... It's one of those things that looks good, until you look closer.

Get a load of what the h1 tag is around on the front page! And it's below an h2 tag!

It's scary. Plus, the css styles used are counter intuitive, and they often use inline styles. And I have trouble reading the way they've structured it.

 

And even the file structure of the thing is scary. So many pages, images outside of an image folder, css and javascript in the same place as all the other files, and everything is all jumbled up. And the content management system the group were using was Contribute. I could go on and on. I think this is going to be a headachey site, though I might just have fun tearing it apart.

does anyone know what a file with an extension like this is for? It's totally empty of anything: doverhotel.html.LCK

Anyway, I was wondering whether there was anything in particular anyone can see that might pose problems for me.

As I get deeper into this site, I feel my headache getting bigger... The navigation is so frustrating.... *sigh* ^^

If the client is happy with the site design then how about recreating the site using existing images and text but cleaning up the background code and organisation along the way? I'm a relative noob to web design and am from a more 'practical' background but if I picked up a job badly done I'd start again from scratch every time!! :-)

Agreed, but wouldn't there then be an increased cost for the client? They might not want to pay to get it made up again when to them it looks fine. But have a chat with them and see what they think.

Mmm.. I've been doing some research into inheriting bad code... And given that it doesn't affect the appearance of the site- that much- I don't think they'll want me to do it... Well, I might propose it next year but for now I work on doing the changes they want. It just takes up far too much time and effort to be worth it at the moment.
