As some of you may know i have landed my first job!!

I have a question though for you pro's out there: How long does you boss give you to design, code and complete a website?

Im talking about nothing special, run of the mill average website.

Because at the moment my boss has asked me to get three done this week! And i had Wednesday off!!

 

Bear in mind I dont work for a company who build/sell websites as such. I just build websites for his company, so he does not know much about web design/development.

From one Welsh guy to another, sometimes bosses have their heads up their arses when it comes to understanding IT. I worked at a company for 3 months before setting up my own business, so I've had some experience of what you're describing. My boss looked at web design in a very business-like way, calculating the profit margin on the quote minus the resource in time and cost to build the actual website, and usually he worked out a website should be completed from start to finish in 2 days, otherwise it didn't become profitable enough to do. Your boss is probably looking at it the same way.

 

I think sometimes we web designers tend to spend too long lovingly crafting our websites until we're 110% happy with it, and then we often get surprised that our bosses wanted it done in half the time we were expecting to take on it.

 

If you're looking at a straight forward 5 page website, simple design, no complicated programming or flash animation involved, you should be able to do it in around 2 days, from design brief through concept, revisions and client feedback to completion. It could take a day longer if a part of the process gets held up, or there is extra features on top.

I do subcontracting work for several agencies and companies but they tend to do the design and I build the sites from those designs.

 

Normally for a static 5-10 page site I'd allow 1 working day (8 hours), assuming designs and all text copy is provided. For 10-25 pages, allow 1-2 working days (8-16 hours) - it really depends on the complexity.

 

If however you have to create a full design well this could take weeks to get client sign off - even if you spend one day designing something and hit the mark first time, it's still going to be at least 2 days or so from when you start to when client says yes. Then you have build time and testing on top.

 

I reckon you need to agree some project times with your boss in advance, normally when I'm subcontracting we agree a schedule so I can get everything done before the deadline.
