Depends on what your focus is. I started as an illustrator with an eye to being a designer, then as time went by was drawn more and more to coding. These two disciplines often go hand in hand, yet are measured by different standards.

 

Content is King:

remember that you're presenting content, let the content dictate your design - use design elements to establish a hierarchical organisation of data.

Be a craftsman: Make sure your HTML is well formed - put tabindexes on forms, avoid inline styles and scripts etc. RT @bluedreamer

 

Don't hack: Try to make your code portable and re-usable. Observe DRY principles (Don't Repeat Yourself)...

keep in touch with experienced web designers if possible and check what they are doing and ho wthey are updating themselvs !
