August 28, 200917 yr Hello, I already posted something similar in the Flash section, so if it seems repetitive I apologize. I have been working in the Print design field for a few years. I feel that I am very capable in layout and illustration however I've noticed an increasing trend for employers asking that designers know web/interactivity as well. I have tried to teach myself some basic html, css, flash and after effects and found myself having major issues with coding/scripting/programming. I felt that flash was a little more intuitive for me because there is more 'design' freedom but Actionscript is just so hard!!! ;( Is there a demand for designers to know motion graphics/after effects? Does anyone have any advice for someone in my shoes? Thank you
August 29, 200917 yr I'd say the demand is there alright, good Flash devs seem to have no shortage of work. Actionscript I'd say is one of those things that's not essential, but if you do know it you can turn out a wider (and better?) range of end products, and maybe command a higher hourly fee. Making the step from print to web is not always easy. With the print world you work to a fixed canvas, your choice of fonts, layout, colours etc. The web is radically different because you don't have a fixed canvas, and you can't always assume your choice of font, layout and colour will be what everyone sees. You should definately get some sort of portfolio online to demonstrate your capabilities, if no-one knows what you do they can't hire you!
