New layout - opinons

Featured Replies

Hey, I've created a new simple layout for my personal site/blog.

www.kiernet.com

I wanted something clean and simple, and pleased with the final outcome, however looking for ways to improve it.

What things do you like about it?

What dont you like it?

What would you improve?

Do the colours work well?

I've not tested it in any other browsers yet, only Google Chrome and FireFox, or any other screen resolution other than 1920x1200, if someone can tell me if it looks OK in other settings.

Thanks :)

It's very bare and looks more like a framework if anything to be honest buddy, it needs something a little more interesting, such as images or more use of colour. I think you just need a little more inspiration for the website and it'll look much nicer! Head over to websites like Design Shack, CSS Mania and Creattica and you won't go far wrong ;).

Your colour is fine, but plain and simple needs those little touches that make it more interestingly plain and simple.

You could try things like using a nice fancy font for your 'KierNet.com' heading. Shrink the font size on Tags and Posted in for a bit of variation. Introduce some small subtle icons perhaps. Add a second colour to use as a highlight. Little things, but they'll make a big difference.

Thanks for the replies :)

What kind of font would be good? I'm not very good at that kinda thing lol, what else would be good for a secondary colour as well? A light blue maybe? Something similar to the colour in the logo for this forum? (Community of Web Designers and Developers)?

The theme of the blog might help with a font - an angry rant might suit a harsh, sharp letter or the lifestyle of your cats might need something a bit fun and quirky.

These are just fom a very quick search - no real thought but seemed to work...

Kinda funky retro

Posh handwritten

More casual handwritten

Just a couple of simple tweaks and it could be improved whilst still remaining simple. Adding a slightly different colour to the hover state on the links for example. Also if the black text was changed to a dark grey it wouldn't look quite so stark. I like the orange though, perhaps add a gadient to the top banner and add a slightly more exciting font. Just my thoughts :)

Messed around with a few things, link hover has changed, think it looks better, and also changed the font colour to dark grey, which does look ALOT better. Just cant find a font that I like for the header. Really starting to bug me now, also not a fan of gradients that much, and not very good at picking colours lol.
