Multiple domains...

Featured Replies

Someone just asked me if it's damaging to purchase a second domain name and redirect it to a website, i assumed that a 301 redirect would be best, however isn't that for redirecting old to new?

Would their be any benefits what so ever? and what are the risks associated?

bumpity... anyone? Been looking on google, but their seems to be alot of mixed messages about this, and plenty of contradicting information.

Yep, use a 301 if you are going to do it, but why do it at all?

The benefit would be capturing type in traffic and re-directing them to your other site. Plus making sure your competition can't register the new domain ;)

Since it is a brand new domain with no links pointing to it, you won't have any link juice to pass along via the 301 so there is no SEO benefit to doing it.

I don't think there is much risk in doing it, but I don't think there is any benefit either, other than capturing type in traffic.

There definitely isn't any risk in doing it. No real benefit either. It boils down to why you need the other domain. The one with the links is the one that matters.

So to gain any benefit you'd need to create a unique mini site or something, for a particular section?

It's a typo of his url (well actually, his original looks like the typo).

Well anyway, thanks guys, that's my one new piece of learning for the day :D

Mini sites are the best the only problem I've seen is that if there is a major connection to your main site then google might not index it. That's what I'm dealing with right now with my mini sites. Let me know if you figure out a way to circumvent this problem.

I woulda guessed just use rel="nofollow" like you do with advertising? Depends how big the site's are i suppose, one or two new links would be fine, but dozens may look a bit like spam :B

If it's a typo then I would grab it and redirect it to the real site. That is exactly the kind of type-in traffic I referred to in my previous post. Also if it was me, I would forget the mini site, and concentrate on building links to teh real site.

If it's a typo site then yes just 301 it. But if you have a domain that could stand on it's own two feet (figuratively speaking) then a mini site might be a smart thing to do. Wow site redesign all of a sudden.
