I was just wondering what's the best approach to this problem. Should I just charge the customer for the site itself letting him pay for the domain and hosting himself or is there a better way of doing this like Taking small monthly payments for the site upkeep that include domain, hositng, basic site update and support costs? What's the best practice ?

Depends what the customer wants, if they already have a domain and hosting, then a one off payment will do. But if they need hosting, domain and updating. Charge them the money for the build of the website, then monthly for the hosting domain and update service. (Depending on how often they think they will need the site updated).

I usually make them buy their domain (though I sometimes recommend registrars if they're clueless).

For hosting, I have a reseller account and WHMCS setup so if they want it from me, they sign up to it, otherwise they can find their own hosting.

 

For both things, I ensure that they're registered under their own name and not mine, so if anything happens then it's their responsibility to sort out and not mine.

 

When I first started, I registered domains for clients, and got in a right mess when it came to domain renewal and they didn't pay.
