May 16, 200917 yr Hi all. I am currently updating my knowledge on CSS and XHTML, but I cannot design, I don't seem to have that designer knack. The site will be designed using div's not tables. Can anyone please give me some tips on my page I am doing for someone. My friend and I both like the logo, but with the white border around the box I have to use a darker shade behind it, and now I am stuck. Thanks
May 16, 200917 yr Hi, Ok first of all I'd have a think about what colour scheme your going to implament accross the whole site, http://tutorialblog.org/30-color-scheme-to...-for-designers/ has a list of websites that will help... Add some colour, the buttons look a little large and like they have been plonked there... http://www.entheosweb.com/website_design/w...gation_tips.asp here is a good tutorial on building navigation. Have you thought about how you want the footer to look like?
May 16, 200917 yr I think the background color you have is spot on. No need to change it. If you go darker you will lose the word "Boxed", and i just think those colors go nice together. If anything the nav bar may need sprucing up a bit? Like have a nice reflection across the top like you have on the logo and obviously have the buttons at a smaller font size. Give it some more content and then have a look at it. Populate it with dummy text (lorum ipsum) if you have to? By the way.....if you need any help with the flash? then let me know... Neil

Neil Yes thanks, I like the colours and have to be careful as not to lose the logo text. I will ammend the links as they do look out of place. Thanks again
May 17, 200917 yr Author Hi all ok so I have made some slight changes to the design which I kinda like but I still think there is something missing but can't think what.
May 17, 200917 yr That's a lot better. But can i suggest some subtle changes that i would do if i was doing the design. First of all i would put the text you have in the header in quotes and increase the size of the words "professional" and "business". Also i would move the logo in slightly so it is level with the "home" button. What else i think is missing is images. Maybe something to do with business, like a man/women in a suit, or laptops ect ect. But i suppose that depends on what you will place in the flash placeholder?

May 17, 200917 yr I noticed that your comp is 600px wide. Unless you're accommodating users with 800px x 600px screens there's no need to have such a small width. Most web designers use a width of 960px for their pages. This is for two main reasons: firstly, a page with that width can be displayed without horizontal scrollbars on 1024px x 768px screens (see here for general screen stats) and secondly, 960 has many whole number factors (it can be divided by many whole numbers to result in a whole number) and so it's ideal for pixel-based grids. The 'de-boxed' logo needs to clearly communicate the idea of 'thinking outside the box' which I'm assuming is the association you wish to suggest. If you combine this idea with the dynamism of 'bursting out of the box', you could create a logo that perhaps depicts an open box out of which the word 'de-boxed' could burst. At the moment the closed box around 'de' doesn't suggest the idea of 'outside the box' because 'de' is in it. To add some coherence to the colours, try replacing the greys with a very desaturated green that matches hue (position on the colour wheel) with the green used elsewhere. This will unify the page. If you replace the greys with a desaturated complement (opposite position on the colour wheel) of the green, this will make the page more dynamic. As neilp suggested the page needs some (relevant) images or graphics to reinforce what you're trying to say. This might be what the flash box is for? You might find it easier to base the design around the content (both multimedia and text). Unless you know what the message is, it will be very difficult to communicate it visually.
