May 12, 200917 yr I'm on Direct Debit and usually pay £72. I just had over £150 taken out of my account by the council I live in a 1 bedroom flat by myself... is this a little excessive for my living situation?
May 12, 200917 yr Unfortunately it's nothing to do with your living situation, it's about where you live. It looks like you've either paid for two months, or your fee has been increased, in which case you should've been informed first. As it's direct debit, you're guarunteed to get your money back if any is unlawfully removed, which may very well be the case. Phone them up immediately and get it sorted, the council are surprisingly helpful when it comes to refunds.
May 12, 200917 yr Author Yeah it's definately not for 2 months because it's more than 2x the normal amount + I pay monthly. It has to be a mistake so I will call them. I don't know how council tax is worked out where you live but here, it has everything to do with the living situation. The number of occupants, the size of the premises, ownership etc.

May 13, 200917 yr Bloody pancake tossers. I bed they do that all the time and most people are too scared to phone up thinking well what if we should have been paying that all along and they back charge us. From my limited knowledge, they cannot put your council tax up or down without you requesting it. I THINK, its decided when the place is either build or in 1991 when poll tax was cancelled. So your in a fixed band, unless you request it to be checked out... So, you now come to the personal bit, if you live on your own i think you only pay 50% of it right? and if ur retired you pay a low amount (even though they use the most services ) Here is a link to money saving expert about checking your band and if your in the right one... So anyway, i doubt its that its probably just an error in their system. it happens to me that i sometimes pay a weird amount on a phone bill so i call them and they sort it. unfortunatly a charge back takes about 2 weeks or something (i think this is the longest they can take by law so... guess what! thats how long they take) so instead they might credit your acc and you wont have to pay next month.
May 13, 200917 yr It's probably the first payment fo the new financial year. My council does the same, I pay 11 equal monthly installments but the first month is always the balance.

May 13, 200917 yr When in the UK I was band E and paying an obscene amount (well over £160 per month for 10 months each year). Happily, there is no such thing as council tax in Malta. Everything comes out of general taxation (which for most income brackets is slightly lower than the UK). You could of course argue that this is why most of the roads in Malta are full of potholes, the buses are 50 years old, etc etc :D

May 14, 200917 yr Wine is reasonably cheap - certainly cheaper than the UK. So is property (away from the resorts). And I do have a (rather battered) small 4x4. But a range rover? Car prices here are almost double what they are in the UK. Cheapest new 4x4 is the new shape Daihatsu Terios. In the UK £12,700. In Malta €24,100. And if you import, they slap the difference on in "duty"... </off-topic>
