There are always new ppl joining here, and often their starting point in dreamweaver. Unfortunately the first efforts using it can be disastrous and mean it doubles your work to correct the errors and problems created.....ARGH!

I agree, dreamweaver is a really good starting point. I remember some of the horrors that I first made in it back in the day. Can anyone say "frameset"? *shudder*

 

Hand coding really is the way to go, but dreamweaver is ace at helping people bridge the gap between garphic and web design

I totally disagree, Dreamweaver is not a good starting point for a beginner, it does too many things the wrong way to be useful to someone starting out. it produces bloated code, which will work but may not be the best most semantic way to create a site.

 

Dreamweaver is intended as a pro design tool so assumes a certain degree of competency, sadly its human nature to look for the easy short cut and a lot of people starting out make the mistake that Dreamweaver is a magic bullet that means you can create a site with no knowledge of code at all.

I dont know how you can say it was a good starting point as by your own admission dreamweaver created some horrors, surely it would have been better to learn to hand code straight off the bat so that when you did finally use dreamweaver you would be able to spot the messy code and sort it out without wasting hours upon hours sorting it out afterwards.

 

I am not bashing Dreamweaver I use it myself but as a starting point for a beginner I strongly disagree that its a valid learning tool.
