Hey

I have just finished designing a site for a client and she likes the site but is quite concerned about the fact that it does not rank high on the google listings. I am new to SEO but am going to sign her up to google's business directory as i read that this will rank her site further up the listings. I have also used alt tags for my images, meta description and meta keywords. The site is hand-coded and the coding complies with strict xhtm and css guidelines, so it should make it easier for search engines to index. I recommend that she sign up to as many directories as she could such as yellow pages and yell. I am going to sign her up to googles as she is not too sure how to do it. I was just wondering what procedures and techniques would you guys recommend and how would a web designer normally go about making sure that a site ranks high up the rankings.

Any advice greatly appreciated

Thanks

All the thing you've said, maybe add a company blog if possible, constant new content is well liked by google, social networking is worth it if you can spend the time, but also relax a little, if you've just finished the site you need some time to pass, you need to be indexed by google, have your links on other sites/directories indexed by google, and also google adds extra points the older your site gets, so just waiting a few weeks/months will naturally see your ranking rise.

Also use Google Webmaster Tools to verify the site and add an XML sitemap. That can help as well.

The best way is to have other sites link to pages within your site (deep links). And the only way to have other sites link to you is to have good content that's constantly updated.

So, a blog with interesting articles will help, and a dynamic front page that has the latest blog headlines etc displayed on it is good. Try displaying RSS feeds from other sites too.
