Starting a project...need help

Featured Replies

Hi people...

...I'm starting a poject (a web site of my own) that's going to be kind of a news portal. Well since I have no expirience with php I'm going to need all the help I can get. I quite familiar with HTML, so I'm guessing that's a start:).

Two main thing I need hepl with are:

1. Member area registration/log in

2. Blog (That is, a section in wich I can post new articals with a comment option for registerd users.

Now,..the main thing I've in mind is that I need a site I can frequently update (new links, new pages and sections).

So as you can see I can use all the help I can get; tutorials, adivice...anything....

Thank you...

Advice: take a look at Wordpress and Joomla - one of them might save you re-inventing the wheel...

Yep I totally agree - wordpress would be my choice for something like this :)

Are you starting this project to learn PHP or is it just to get a site up?

If you're just after getting a site online, then do as these guys say and use WordPress, If you want to learn PHP then break the site down into chunks and tackle them one bit at a time.

I would advise wordpress rather than joomla.

Wordpress is a lot simpler to use, easier to navigate, easy to install plugins, easy to change themes, edit the css and content.

I always use wordpress for blogs for company websites I make due to it being so customer friendly and also it's really good for SEO. :)

Hm..sorry I just saw the full user registration part...it sounds interesting. I'll try it...But what do I need to host it my self...web server, MySQL ,PHP, and a domain...anything else?

You can see the system requirements for wordpress here.

Basically PHP, MySQL, mod_rewrite.
